Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are an excellent way to restore teeth with small to moderate decay. These precisely fabricated restorations fit into or onto the missing or decayed portion of the tooth much like a single jigsaw piece fits into a puzzle.
Usually made of highly esthetic porcelain, they can also be made out of gold. An inlay covers only one or two surfaces of the tooth and is used to restore a small amount of decay, while an onlay actually covers one or more cusps on the chewing surface of the tooth.
Inlays and onlays can be used to repair any level of decay on a portion of any tooth providing a long-term, durable restoration, lasting longer than a filling. For those patients that need to strengthen and reinforce a tooth, inlays and onlays can limit the amount of healthy tooth structure removed, compared to a full coverage crown. Visit Dr. Michele Chalmers, D.D.S. in her Pleasanton Bay Area office to discuss your inlay and onlay options.
